MAIN STREET CAUCUS STATEMENT ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT
Washington, D.C. — Today, Republican Main Street Caucus Chair Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) & Vice Chair Stephanie Bice (R-OK) issued a statement following passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3746). The bill passed the U.S. House 314-117.
“House Republicans voted to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which will save taxpayers an estimated $2.1 trillion and allow the U.S. to fulfill its financial obligations. Never in history has a debt ceiling increase been paired with actual spending cuts, but that is exactly what Republican leadership achieved,” said Johnson and Bice.
“Our country has been on an unsustainable track of reckless spending and borrowing. No business or household in America could operate the way the federal government has been operating.
“Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans delivered conservative wins in this bill: reducing non-defense discretionary spending to pre-inflationary FY22 levels; capping discretionary spending; rescinding tens of billions in Covid funds; slashing funding for 87,000 new IRS agents; streamlining permitting for infrastructure projects; and adding work requirements for able-bodied adults on SNAP and TANF.
“This is not the end. It’s the beginning of taking steps, whenever possible, to rein in our debt and spending. There is a lot more work to be done, but this bill is a win for fiscal responsibility and economic prosperity, and the overwhelming majority of Main Street Republicans were proud to support it.”
