MAIN STREET CAUCUS URGES SPEAKER JOHNSON TO FOCUS ON THREE MAJOR PRIORITIES
Washington, D.C. – Today, members of the Republican Main Street Caucus sent a letter to Speaker Johnson urging him to begin his Speakership by focusing on three major priorities: to pass appropriations bills, reduce the national debt, and safeguard our national security.
The letter highlights the importance of meeting our funding deadline of November 17, keeping the government open, and funding our troops and CBP agents. “Ensuring government funding is more crucial than ever given the war taking place in Israel,” said 49 members of the caucus.
In the letter, the members also urged Speaker Johnson to advance H.R. 5779, the Fiscal Commission Act of 2023, which would establish a bipartisan and bicameral commission to improve the long-term fiscal situation of our country. The letter points towards reducing regulations and unleashing American energy as ways to spur economic growth.
The members also point out the critical need to secure our southern border, and efforts to add border security provisions in a previous stopgap funding bill. The members continued, “While our bill did not pass the House, it was clear there was willingness among many Senators to find solutions to the border crisis. We ask that you prioritize a plan to secure the border with willing partners in the Senate as soon as possible.”
The letter concluded saying, “Main Street Republicans stand ready to work with you to continue advancing a pragmatic, conservative agenda throughout the remainder of the 118th Congress. We ask that you continue to provide rank-and-file Members from across the Conference a seat at the table and ownership of the legislative process.”
